Utah weather can't make up its mind, no surprise there, so I've been taking advantage of the colder days and enjoying one of my favorite drinks. It was cold and snowy last week when I headed downtown so I couldn't resist stopping at my favorite location for a hot chocolate before I headed to The Little America for my conference. Hatch Family Chocolates is one of my favorite local businesses and their hot chocolate is the best treat! I'm honestly surprised that I walked in and out of there with JUST a hot chocolate; that never happens.
Where: Hatch Family Chocolates (376 8th Ave, Salt Lake City)
Cost: $6.99 per cup (totally worth it!!!)

I don't remember the first time I had Hatch's hot chocolate, but I've been hooked ever since. It's perfectly rich and creamy and if you add a flavor, it's the perfect ratio of flavor to chocolate. When I was eating dairy free while nursing my second baby, I ordered the vegan hot chocolate and it was almost better than the regular hot chocolate. My go to is orange milk chocolate and I'm not lying when I tell you that it's one of the best things you'll ever taste in your life. It's a good thing I don't live closer because I might be there daily or multiple times a day during the winter enjoying a cup or two or three.
Hatch's isn't just about hot chocolate and I'd advise you to go in with a spending limit so you don't go too overboard. If you're looking for a date night treat, I obviously suggest the hot chocolate, and I've been known to order it no matter the season or the weather. We've ordered their frozen hot chocolate in the past and they have ice cream, milkshakes, homemade caramel and of course, chocolates. The two things that I order any time I go in are chocolate dipped candied orange peels and Karmel Malone Krispies. The Karmel Malone Krispies are a delicious combination of Grandma Hatch's Caramel and their Marshmallow cream sandwiched between two Krispies. You can get yours plain or dipped in milk or dark chocolate; I suggest the milk chocolate.
I love the atmosphere at Hatch's. They have a generous amount of space filled with chairs and tables and an amazing mural painted on one wall. I can tell that the owners and employees create a relationship with each customer because each time I go in, there are at least one or two other customers in there with me who are carrying on a conversation with the Hatch's workers behind the counters, and they talk as if they're the best of friends. One day, maybe we'll be regulars like so many of those people are. You will always find friends chatting over a treat at one of their tables, and Hatch's hosts fun community events every week (check out their FB post for details).
The moral of this story is, if you or your loved one are a fan of chocolate and dessert, you NEED to make this a goal for one of your date nights coming up.
