National Donut Day - Where to go in Davis County

One of the best days of the year happens the first Friday in June every single year. It's National Donut Day!!! National Donut/Doughnut Day started during WWI. Each year, we celebrate the Salvation Army Doughnut Lassies who served doughnuts to soldiers who were stationed in France. The first official "doughnut day" celebrated those Doughnut Lassies and helped to raise money for struggling families during the Great Depression. Now we use it as an excuse to eat a delicious pastry, but it's fun to know the history behind these random holidays and put some more meaning to them.

National Donut Day

When: Friday, June 7th
A bakery near you (see suggestions below)
Cost: Donuts cost anywhere from $0.50 to $1 a piece. So depending on the number of donuts you want to eat.....

If you're planning on celebrating donut day, I would suggest ordering your donuts ahead of time or stopping by first thing in the morning. In years past, we haven't made it to a bakery before evening hits and by then, they're usually out. Who wouldn't want to celebrate National Donut Day? Any excuse to indulge in one of my favorite treats!

Where to find the best donuts in Davis County

Parsons' Bakery (535 W 2600 S, Bountiful) - I haven't had one of their donuts in a while because we don't live right down the street like we used to, but their donuts are some of my favorites. "Parsons' Bakery creates family traditions for each generation."

Dick's Market (2280 S Orchard Dr, Bountiful and 84 West Parrish Lane, Centerville) - This has always been my go to location for donuts. A few years ago, Dick's Market merged with the local Fresh Markets. As a result, the bakeries changed a bit. The Bountiful location has the best donuts now, in my opinion.

Madbrook Donut Company (Station Park Mall by Fountain Square, Farmington and 540 E 1700 S, Clearfield) - Home of the triangle donut. I'd be tempted to grab one of their large, Texas sized donuts to share, just the two of us.

Caffe Torino - (58 N Main Street, Farmington) - They aren't necessarily known for donuts, but I tried the cronut a few weeks ago and it was delicious! I got a chocolate flavored one, but they also come in raspberry or maple. Each cronut is filled with custard and is as delicious of a pastry as you'd expect.

Bowman's Market (326 Main Street, Kaysville) - After a lot of suggestions from our neighbors last year, we finally tried Bowman's Donuts and they did not disappoint. They're our go to location for Saturday morning donut runs now. We love that they have mini glazed donuts that are the perfect size for our kids. I've been told that their donuts go on sale each night, so if there is anything left, you could grab one as part of your date night.

Sweet Cakes Bake Shop (237 W 200 N, Kaysville) - This was suggested to us as a great location for gluten free desserts and donuts. Donuts are not on their online menu however, so you may want to call before stopping in.

Donut Kabobs (Various - Food Truck) We had the opportunity to try Donut Kabobs at a local festival one summer and they were delicious. Check their social media for information about where they'll be each night.

National Donut Day

Tasty's (612 N Main St, Kaysville) - This is one place that we've never been but that comes highly recommended by a few neighbors. I did see that they have one of my favorites, chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and coconut flakes, YUM!

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (968 North Main Street, Layton) - Everyone gets a free doughnut in celebration of the holiday! Stop by and grab yours before they run out.

Dunkin' Donuts (512 W Antelope Dr, Layton) - This is one of my favorite stops for breakfast, and their hot chocolate is delicious. With the purchase of any beverage, you can get a free donut!

If you aren't able to make donuts part of your date night activities Friday, June 1st, find time to stop and grab your donuts sometime during the day. At the end of the night or after the kids are in bed, sit down together and enjoy your pastries!

Where will you be stopping for your donut? What flavor of donut do you always reach for first?

The Best Places to Get Hot Chocolate in Davis County

Drinking hot chocolate together has been one of mine and husband’s favorite things to do since early on in our relationship. It can be a quick way to get some quality time in together at the end of a long day, when you have an afternoon off work together or after the kids have gone to bed. Whether you're stuck at home, have a couple of hours to spare or are looking for something fun to fill an entire afternoon, a hot chocolate tasting would make a really fun date night!

For a fun hot chocolate tasting date activity, make a list of places that serve hot chocolate you want to try. Break the list up and try a new location every week so you don’t get burnt out on hot chocolate too quickly. Find some time for a mini date, or go out and get a cup you can bring home and enjoy together before bedtime. At the end of the season, decide for yourselves which cup of chocolate you prefer.

The Best Place to Get Hot Chocolate in Davis County

Locally Owned

Caffe Torrino - If you haven’t visited this quaint shop on Farmington’s Main Street yet, you need to stop by! Caffe Torrino used to be located in Station Park, but made a the move to Main Street recently and expanded their menu. The Chocolatto isn’t technically hot chocolate, but it’s one of my favorite things on the menu. This drink is the consistency of pudding and its warm and delicious. They also have hot chocolate and steamers on their menu and those are yummy as well.

Last Course - Not only does Last Course have amazing dessert and ice cream, they have hot chocolate as well. You can get a cup of European hot chocolate in milk, dark or white flavor. Take your treat up a notch with a Hot Chocolate Float, adding a scoop of ice cream to the cup. This is my favorite way to enjoy European hot chocolate!

Chain Restaurants

Dunkin’ Donuts - This is by far one of my favorite, lower cost cups of hot chocolate out there. It’s perfectly chocolatey and stays warm for quite a while. We miss the store in Bountiful and living a few blocks away so we could grab a cup on our way to work most mornings. There is a store in Layton and I plan on stopping by for a cup and breakfast to go a couple of times this winter.

Maverik Gas Stations - We live right next to a Maverik, so when the craving hits, we’ll drive the block to the gas station and grab hot chocolate to enjoy with a Redbox. I love adding a pump of hazelnut syrup to my cup before I leave.

Worth the Trip

Hatch Family Chocolates - A few years ago, I discovered this fun, family owned chocolate shop in The Avenues of Salt Lake. Someone suggested that I try their hot chocolate and I immediately fell in love. I try to get down to drink a cup at least two or three times every year. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a sad thing that I don’t live closer so that I can stop by every week for my favorite chocolatey treat. Click here to read more of my thoughts on Hatch’s delicious hot chocolate.

{CLOSED} Last Course - Farmington's New Dessert Destination

We’re sad to say that this Davis County favorite is no longer in business.

A couple of months ago, I was introduced to Last Course through some friends on Instagram. I heard soon after that they were going to be opening a store at Farmington Station Park and I've watched their Instagram feed with anticipation of that store opening so I could finally test them out. We were really excited to get away for a short dessert date the other night and can't wait to go back and try even more options from their menu. I can guarantee this will be a very frequented destination for date night, girl's night out and just because I need a sweet treat.

Where: Farmington Station Park (located south east of the fountains, just a few stores east of Johnny Rockets)
Cost: average of $8 per dessert

Last Course - Farmington Station Park

Last Course is the perfect stop for date night! We walked in around 9:30pm and it was obvious that 90% of the people there were doing the same thing we were. Some of them were out with a group and others were there for a little alone time, but we all had that "date night vibe" in common. The atmosphere is fun, the staff is friendly and the desserts look pretty and taste delicious.

There were so many things on the menu that looked yummy to me. I was tempted by a few of the ice cream flavors and really wanted to get the Glamping S'mores. My final decision was a dessert that I've been eyeing for months, the German Chocolate Cake. It's served under a smooth dome of dark chocolate with a warm cup of caramel sauce on the side. I was given good instructions for how to melt the chocolate dome using the sauce and a few other couples in line were interested in watching the show. The dome of chocolate melted to reveal chunks of German Chocolate Cake and toasted coconut. It was just as delicious as it looked!

While we were in line, I sampled the Smoked Maple Bacon ice cream and it blew me away. There are decent sized chunks of real bacon scattered throughout the ice cream and the maple flavor wasn't too overwhelming. It was the perfect combination and I'd be all over a scoop of that in a waffle bowl the next time I'm there.

My husband ordered the Peanut Butter Pie. I loved the presentation of this dessert, served in a circular shape, rather than the wedge you think of when you hear the word pie. It was a graham and peanut butter crust topped with a peanut butter mousse and brownie crackers. He compared it to eating whipped peanut butter cup filling. I stole a bite and thought it tasted really yummy!

I really want to try the Glamping S'mores, Tortachunga, Chocolate Stack, Foster's Banana Taco and one of their many unique flavors of ice cream. My husband said he wants to try the Praline Peach Cobbler from the monthly menu for September and I'm intrigued by the Chocolate Turtle Cheesecake that's on that same menu. The Chocolate Hazelnut Cookie Ice Cream has been calling my name as well. We obviously have plenty more excuses to go back, as soon as the next couple of weeks before the monthly creations go away.

You can make a date out of just a visit to Last Course or you could combine it with a relaxing chat around the fountains. If you want to make a night of it, try one of our favorite restaurants at Station Park, take in the live entertainment around the fountain, do some window shopping and see what all Station Park has to offer, then end your night with a treat from Last Course.

Have you been to Last Course yet? What's your favorite thing on the menu?

The Best Hot Chocolate in Utah

Utah weather can't make up its mind, no surprise there, so I've been taking advantage of the colder days and enjoying one of my favorite drinks. It was cold and snowy last week when I headed downtown so I couldn't resist stopping at my favorite location for a hot chocolate before I headed to The Little America for my conference. Hatch Family Chocolates is one of my favorite local businesses and their hot chocolate is the best treat! I'm honestly surprised that I walked in and out of there with JUST a hot chocolate; that never happens.

Where: Hatch Family Chocolates (376 8th Ave, Salt Lake City)
Cost: $6.99 per cup (totally worth it!!!)

I don't remember the first time I had Hatch's hot chocolate, but I've been hooked ever since. It's perfectly rich and creamy and if you add a flavor, it's the perfect ratio of flavor to chocolate. When I was eating dairy free while nursing my second baby, I ordered the vegan hot chocolate and it was almost better than the regular hot chocolate. My go to is orange milk chocolate and I'm not lying when I tell you that it's one of the best things you'll ever taste in your life. It's a good thing I don't live closer because I might be there daily or multiple times a day during the winter enjoying a cup or two or three.

Hatch Family hot chocolate

Hatch's isn't just about hot chocolate and I'd advise you to go in with a spending limit so you don't go too overboard. If you're looking for a date night treat, I obviously suggest the hot chocolate, and I've been known to order it no matter the season or the weather. We've ordered their frozen hot chocolate in the past and they have ice cream, milkshakes, homemade caramel and of course, chocolates. The two things that I order any time I go in are chocolate dipped candied orange peels and Karmel Malone Krispies. The Karmel Malone Krispies are a delicious combination of Grandma Hatch's Caramel and their Marshmallow cream sandwiched between two Krispies. You can get yours plain or dipped in milk or dark chocolate; I suggest the milk chocolate.

I love the atmosphere at Hatch's. They have a generous amount of space filled with chairs and tables and an amazing mural painted on one wall. I can tell that the owners and employees create a relationship with each customer because each time I go in, there are at least one or two other customers in there with me who are carrying on a conversation with the Hatch's workers behind the counters, and they talk as if they're the best of friends. One day, maybe we'll be regulars like so many of those people are. You will always find friends chatting over a treat at one of their tables, and Hatch's hosts fun community events every week (check out their FB post for details).

The moral of this story is, if you or your loved one are a fan of chocolate and dessert, you NEED to make this a goal for one of your date nights coming up.

The Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie for Date Night at Home

One of the biggest reasons that I started Davis County Dates was because I would see fun or unique businesses in Salt Lake and Utah County and feel a little envious that there was nothing like that closer to home. Most of the time I'd find out that Davis County did have similar places to eat and play but they just weren't as well known. I set out on a mission to find all of the cool things in our area and share them with all of you.

Where: Your House
Cost: $15/dozen

The Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie

The Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie is one of those things that I wish I'd known existed sooner. I've sat and watched other people enjoying fresh baked cookies delivered right to their door and wished I could be enjoying them too. The good news is, if you live from Syracuse to Farmington, you can enjoy fresh baked cookies on a lazy evening at home without having to do any work yourself other than sending a text and opening the front door.

The most unique thing about The Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie are the three different chips that you'll find in your cookie. Chocolate, butterscotch and white chips are scattered throughout each cookie and make a really great combination of flavors. The cookies are large, soft and delicious and still tasted great the next day when we finished off our dozen.
