Davis County 4th of July and Other Summer Festivals

One of the best things about summer are the festivals, fireworks and other celebrations! It makes every community feel small town and everyone ends the weekend exhausted, sun-kissed and happy. The only thing that would make the summer better would be if every city would schedule their festivals back to back, rather than on the same weekends, and we could celebrate for three weeks straight. Do you think we could manage to get a three week paid holiday for everyone in Davis County as well??

The festivals in our area start THIS WEEK!!! And I thought you might like to know when the parades are running, where the festivals and food are located and all of the best places to watch fireworks. If you plan your activities accordingly, you could hit multiple parades, participate in a few different festivals, and sneak kisses under the best firework shows in town.

The Best Place for a Firework Date Night in Davis County

One of the best things about July, in my opinion, are the firework shows! I love cuddling up under on a blanket, watching the fireworks and listening to music, and then sticking around to stargaze for a while afterward. With two little kids, we won't get to go somewhere to see the fireworks for the next few years, but we are lucky because a private golf course behind our house puts on a show on the 4th of July. We can watch from the comfort of our own backyard while those kids sleep inside.

Cost: Free

Check out this post to find out if a festival is involved with the firework show that you are choosing to attend. If it is, you will be able to find food vendors for dinner, snacks and treats to enjoy during the show. If you are choosing to watch the show from another location, pull up Google Maps and see what there is in the area, grab some food to go and enjoy a picnic while you wait for the fireworks to start.

Disclaimer: I do not know where each show is being shot off from. One of the locations noted below may not be available for viewing because of that location.

4th of july fireworks

Saturday June 30

Syracuse Founders Park - Dusk - Syracuse City: If you don't want to join the crowd at Founders Park, consider watching from one of the open fields at Canterbury Park

Tuesday July 3

Centerville Smith Park - 9:45pm - Centerville City: Founders Park is a great place to watch this firework show, with entertainment prefacing the show. You could also watch tailgating style from the parking lot of Walmart Supercenter.

Eaglewood Golf Course - 10pm - North Salt Lake City: The Golf Course offers a lot of space for watching the show. You might also check out Wild Rose Trailhead Park or Deer Hollow Park.

West Bountiful City Park - 10pm - West Bountiful: If you're able to grab some grass on the east side of Frontage Road in Centerville, just across the freeway from the park, you might have a great view and you can grab food or a treat from the restaurants just down the street.

Tuesday July 4

Barnes Park - 10pm - Kaysville City: This is a new location for this firework show this year and I haven't heard any great suggestions for where to watch the show. There is a lot of space in the park, so you might not have too hard of a time finding a place to watch. There is also an industrial park just north of the park where you might find some space to sit your camping chairs and watch the show.

Oakridge Country Club - 10pm - Farmington: Every year, Oakridge hosts a party for their members that ends with a firework show over the golf course. Only members of the country club can attend, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the show. Heritage Park in Farmington (1591 N 1075 W, Farmington) has a large field area and is a great place to relax and watch the show with your family.

Friday July 20

Mueller Park Jr. High - 10pm - Woods Cross/Bountiful City: There is a lot of open space around the junior high and neighboring park. You could also try to watch the show from Eggett park.

One of my very favorite things to do is to find an overlook that we can drive to in the mountains and have a view of the entire valley while fireworks are going off. You may not have the very best seats in the house for the big shows, but now that aerial fireworks are allowed, it's fun to watch them popping up across the valley.

Most big shows have music being played in the park or area where the fireworks are being shown. If you choose to watch the show from somewhere other than the main show area, bring your own music! Put together a fun playlist or pull up your favorite station on a phone app. Create your own atmosphere for the fireworks and then shift to some more romantic songs while you look at the stars afterward.

The Perfect Date for National Fishing Week

National Fishing and Boating Week takes place this week and I thought you might want to plan a date night to celebrate! This post contains everything that you need to know to plan your fishing date(s) or getaway this week.

Location: A pond near you - see list below
Cost: Varies based on fishing license, gear needed, etc.

National fishing week

If I were you, I would go fishing this coming Saturday, June 9th because it is free fishing day in Utah! This means that you can fish on public bodies of water without a fishing license. The cost of your date will go down if you don't need a fishing license.

To fish on any other day of the year, you will need to get a license first. You can purchase your fishing license online. Once you've picked up your license, grab any gear that you need. If you don't own gear, see if anyone in your family or friend group is willing to let you borrow theirs, or go out and invest in some of your own. If you're considering turning fishing into a hobby, even if you only go a few times a year, it might be worth investing in all of the right equipment for yourself.

Bountiful Pond

Now that you're already to go fishing, head to a pond near you. Below is a list of the bodies of water in Davis County where you can go fishing. If there are any missing from the list, feel free to e-mail us and let us know! Click on the links below to find out more about each fishing location (ie directions, size, hours, fish available, and restrictions specific to that body of water).

Our Favorite Davis County Chinese - Joy Luck

In our house, we consider Joy Luck to have the best Chinese food in Davis County. When we lived in Bountiful, we ate there on a regular basis. If we weren't there in the restaurant, we were at home enjoying takeout at least once every couple of months. Now that we live in Farmington, we don't eat there as often, mostly because by the time we'd get our takeout order home, it would be cold. (We're still looking for a comparable restaurant up north and if you have any suggestions, we're open to trying them out.) But if we're going on a date and are craving Chinese food, you'll often find us at Joy Luck.

Where: Joy Luck (566 W 1350 S, Woods Cross)
Cost: ~$10 per person

Joy Luck Chinese Restaurant

Joy Luck has played a big part in our relationship, so it holds an extra special place in our heart. Every time we walk in the restaurant, I'm flooded with memories. The month we got engaged, we went on a lunch date, and over a plate of Strawberry Chicken, we picked a wedding date. A few weeks later, my husband proposed to me with my ring in a fortune cookie after we'd finished another Chinese food lunch date. It wasn't at Joy Luck, but it was special just the same. The two of us went to dinner at Joy Luck with our parents, so that they could get to know each other, just a few weeks after we got engaged. And I took my bridesmaids there for dinner a few weeks before the wedding. We've spent many date nights here since and every single one was delicious.

Joy Luck Bountiful Family Dinner Style

Our favorite way to order food when we go to dinner at Joy Luck is the Dinner Combination Style or the Classic Family Dinner. We love that you can turn your entree into a full meal with a couple of appetizers, and soup or salad. If you're on a lunch date, their lunch specials already come with those options. If you want a lot of food to share and have as leftovers, definitely go with the Classic Family Dinner, because it's only $0.25 more for a lot of extra food.

Even when we order the individual portion size plates for dinner, we collaborate as we review the menu and each get something that we'll both enjoy. We love to share our meal and enjoy a little bit of everything. We still always end up with leftovers and both get to enjoy some of each entree for lunch again the next day. If you're doing the math, that's two meals from each entree and that's the individual portion sizes.

Joy Luck Chines Restaurant Chicken Dishes

One of our other favorite things about Joy Luck is the variety of chicken entrees. There are six fruity flavored chickens and four savory ones. My husband is partial to their Strawberry Chicken and I love their Orange Chicken. We always go in thinking that we're going to try one of the others like Pineapple or Lemon, but we always end up falling back on our regular favorites. Maybe one day we'll stick to our plan.

Joy Luck Green Salad and Egg Drop Soup

My husband loves Joy Luck's Creamy Egg Drop Soup, and I always get a side salad. I don't know what it is about their side salads, maybe it's the ranch dressing or the crispy noodles on top, but I look forward to eating it almost as much as I look forward to my entree.

Chinese Food Appetizers

When you order the lunch special or one of their combination dinners, each person gets an egg roll, cream cheese wonton and a fried prawn. Neither of us are a big fan of seafood of any kind, so we like to swap our prawn out for an extra wonton or egg roll. When I was pregnant with my first baby, I craved the cream cheese wontons often and would pick up an order on my way home from work sometimes.

Joy Luck Chicken Lo Mein

The last time we went to dinner, our entrees were served with ham fried rice and crispy wontons. I didn't remember our food being presented that way in the past, but I thought it was great! Their ham fried rice was fresh and looked really good.

We hadn't been to Joy Luck in a year or so the last time we went, but now I'm determined to go back often, because the food was excellent. We always receive the best service and love the atmosphere that they've created.
