We’re still soaking up all of the holiday fun, but with the winter solstice just around the corner, now felt like the perfect time to start sharing winter date ideas, even though it hasn’t fully felt like winter yet. We’ve been spoiled with a beautiful, extended fall this year, with mild temperatures, sunny days, a bit of rain, and just a hint of snow in the forecast. I’ll be honest, I’ve loved every minute of it. Fall is my favorite season, and it’s been nice to truly soak it all in this year.
As shorter days and colder weather start to roll in and holiday activities begin to wind down, having winter plans on the calendar can make all the difference. I’ve pulled together some fun winter date ideas and family activities to help make the season feel a little brighter, a little warmer, and a lot more enjoyable.

Bundle up, bring a thermos of something warm, and lean into the nostalgia that makes sledding such a great winter date.
Explore Antelope Island in the Winter
Winter is one of the best times to explore Antelope Island, especially since the bugs that show up during warmer months aren’t an issue. The cooler temperatures and quieter trails make the island feel peaceful and wide open, which is perfect for a winter date.
You can enjoy a scenic drive through the island to spot wildlife, hike one of the trails that remains open during the colder months, or even book a winter horseback ride for a unique way to experience the landscape. For an extra memorable date, stay after dark and take in the night sky. Antelope Island is an International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places nearby for stargazing.
Go Stargazing in Davis County
Bundling up with hot cocoa and heading out to stargaze is a simple but meaningful winter date idea. Winter skies offer a different view of the stars since the Earth faces parts of the solar system that aren’t visible during the warmer months, making this season especially rewarding for night-sky viewing.
For an extra fun experience, Davis County Libraries offer telescopes that can be reserved and checked out, allowing you to get a closer look at planets, constellations, and deep-sky objects. Whether you head to a quiet neighborhood park, a canyon pull-off, or somewhere like Antelope Island, stargazing is a peaceful way to slow down and connect.

Hot Chocolate Tasting in Davis County
If you’re looking for a cozy winter date, a hot chocolate tasting is an easy favorite. We love hot chocolate and are always on the hunt for a really good cup. This winter, I’ve even set a personal goal to taste every cup in the area and find the most delicious hot chocolate in the county. It’s a challenge I’m genuinely excited about.
You can keep it simple by picking up a few different flavors from the grocery store for an at-home tasting, or turn it into a mini adventure by stopping at a few local spots and grabbing hot chocolate to go. Sip, compare notes, and enjoy quality conversation as you decide which one takes the top spot.

Plan a Progressive Dinner in Davis County
Progressive dinners are a fun way to turn a simple night out into something memorable. Instead of eating at just one restaurant, you enjoy one course at each stop, like drinks, appetizers, the main dish, and dessert, all at different locations. It’s a great way to try new restaurants or revisit favorite menu items in one evening.
For a playful twist, try a backward progressive dinner and start with dessert before working your way back to appetizers or drinks. However you plan it, the experience feels intentional and keeps the night moving without feeling rushed.

Cookie Skillets at Home
A cookie skillet date at home is the definition of winter comfort food. These are one of our favorite desserts, whether we’re making them on the grill during the summer or baking them in the oven once colder weather sets in. Warm, gooey, and straight-up cozy, they’re hard to beat.
Cookie skillets pair perfectly with a relaxed night in. Enjoy them while binge-watching a favorite show, or skip the screens and use the time to sit, talk, and reconnect. Sometimes the simplest at-home dates end up being the most memorable. Click here for our cookie skillet recipe and instructions.
Try an International Food Crawl
If you like the idea of a progressive dinner, an international food crawl is a fun twist. Instead of focusing on courses, you choose different cuisines to enjoy throughout the night. Think Asian, Indian, Italian, Mexican, or whatever you’re in the mood for. Each stop brings a new flavor and a new experience.
You can make a night of it by dining at a few different restaurants, or keep things cozy by grabbing takeout from each spot and enjoying dinner at home. Either way, it’s a playful way to explore new foods and mix up your usual date-night routine.

Pizza and Arcade Games
For a low-pressure indoor date that’s equal parts fun and nostalgic, pizza and arcade games are always a win. Louie’s Pizzeria in Layton, paired with the adjoining Main Street Arcade, is a favorite spot for both date nights and family outings.
When we go, we like to order our pizza, then head into the arcade to play while we wait. After eating, it’s easy to bounce between the tables and the games, which creates a great mix of connection, conversation, and playful competition. It’s one of those dates that feels simple but leaves everyone smiling.

Get Creative with a Crafty Date Night
A crafty date night is a fun way to slow down, try something new, and create something together. Davis County has a couple of great options depending on whether you’re in the mood for something relaxed or a little more playful.
Salty Clay Art and Pottery Studio in Farmington (1050 Shepard Lane, Suite 11, Farmington) offers weekly adult canvas paint nights, pottery wheel classes, and paint-your-own pottery sessions. These guided classes make it easy to enjoy the process, even if you don’t consider yourself artistic.
If you’re looking for something more energetic, the Splatter Paint Room at Axe-N-Smash in Layton (2156 Main St. #530, Layton) lets you book a private room for up to six people where you can have a full paint fight. There’s even a glow-in-the-dark option for an extra fun twist. Ponchos, eye protection, shoe coverings, and hair coverings are provided, so you can focus on having fun and getting messy together.
Whether you leave with a finished piece of art or just a lot of laughs, a creative date is a memorable way to spend a winter night.
Go Axe Throwing in Davis County
Any time I think of axe throwing, I picture flannel, wood chopping, and snow in the air, which makes it feel like a perfect winter date. Hatchet Jaxe Axe Throwing (443 Deseret Dr., Suite B, Kaysville) and Axe-N-Smash (2146 N Main St. #530, Layton) both offer a unique indoor experience that is adventurous and exciting.

After working up an appetite, warm up with a soak in the Homestead Crater, enjoy dinner at one of Midway’s local restaurants, and settle in for the night at a charming inn or bed and breakfast. The slower pace, snowy scenery, and a small-town feel make Midway an ideal winter escape for couples looking to reconnect and relax.

Play a Round at Topgolf
Topgolf is a fun winter date idea that’s absolutely worth the short drive. One of the best parts is that the hitting bays are temperature-controlled, so you can enjoy golfing even when it’s freezing outside. It’s active without being intimidating and easy to enjoy, whether you’re a golfer or just there for fun.
Think of it as bowling, but for golf. You can hit balls, keep score if you want, and enjoy food and drinks right at your bay. The menu is worth checking out on its own, especially their brunch, which makes Topgolf a great daytime or evening date option.
Canyon Sleigh Rides and Elk Viewing at Hardware Ranch
For a truly unique winter date, head north for a canyon sleigh ride and up-close elk viewing at Hardware Ranch in Hyrum. This classic winter experience feels straight out of a postcard and is well worth the drive.
Elk viewing season typically runs from early December through mid-February, with wagon rides operating daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM and lasting about 45 minutes. There's no street address, but searching for Hardware Ranch in your maps app will get you there easily.
Bundle up, bring a thermos of hot cocoal, and enjoy a slow, scenic ride through the canyon while watching elk gather for the winter. It's a peaceful, memorable date that's perfect for soaking in the season together. Click here for current elk-viewing season dates and activity details.
